|THE 16TH MACAU INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INVESTMENT FAIR|
The 16th Macau International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF), the largest trade fair in Macau, and currently the only exhibition event in Macau accredited by The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) was held at the Venetian Macau-Resort-Hotel on October 20-23, 2011.
Addressing at the opening ceremony on October 20,2011, Mr Francis Tam Pak-Yuen, Secretary for Economy and Finance said that MIF aims to blend Macau's unique eastern and western cultures' advantages to effectively play the role of regional business platform, in order for exhibitors to jointly meet a new round cooperation and development opportunities. This year's event attracted 850 exhibitors from 60 countries and mainland provinces and regions, including Nansha of Guangdong and Hengqin island of Zhuhai, which showcased their services and products over the 30,000-square-metre exhibition venue. The fair also features a special retail zone for SMEs.
The four-day trade fair recorded a total of five billion patacas deals and 95,000 visitors, which 5,700 were professional visitors.
Most of the deals, which increase in number by 30.65 percent from last year, are related to tourism, culture, IT, manufacturing, real-estate, logistics, human resources, traditional Chinese medicine, eco-products, sales agencies and health products, as well as cooperation between governments and associations.
|MACAO WILL SET UP AN OFFICE IN TAIWAN|
Alex Tam Chon Weng, chief spokesman of the Macau SAR Government announced on 4 July that Macau will set up an office in Taiwan this year to provide comprehensive services for Macau residents in Taiwan. The Office will strengthen cooperation between Macau and Taiwan in various fields. He described it as a major breakthrough of Chief Executive Fernando Chui's office.
The office, formally named the Macau Economic and Cultural Office, is designated to provide assistance to Macau residents in Taiwan over study, employment, business and emergency issues; promote communication and cooperation between the two in the fields of tourism, education, health and culture; and strengthen cooperation in fighting against cross-border crime, according to Tam.
Meanwhile, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center, the Taiwan authorities' unofficial representative office in Macau, will be renamed the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office.
|HENGQIN BENEFITED FROM MORE FAR-REACHING POLICIES|
Macau Chief Executive Chui Sai On said on August 22 that the policies approved by the Chinese State Council to be applied to Hengqin Island would be more far-reaching than the existing policies applied to the mainland's special economic zones.
"According to The Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta, and in line with the Guangdong-Macau Cooperation Framework Agreement, the governments of Guangdong province and the Macau SAR have been cooperating on Hengqin Island as well as in Nansha and Guangzhou. Meanwhile, we are also promoting Traditional Chinese Medicine Scientification, Guangzhou-Macau Cultural Creativity Industrial Park and the Cruise Port of Nansha will be our next prioritized projects" Chui added.
Chui Sai On also said that, as part of the Guangdong-Macau Cooperation Joint Conference, a Guangzhou-Macau Cooperation Working Group was set up. The two parties would make use of the facilities available in Nansha as a platform to promote Guangzhou-Macau cooperation.
Hengqin Island has an area of 104.46 square kilometers. The cooperation between Guangdong and Macau, especially on movements of people and goods, border control, and tax benefits, aims at supporting industrial development in Guangdong and Macau.
