Hengqin Island as model of Macau-Guangdong Collaboration

   The Macau SAR Government and Guangdong Provincial Government signed an agreement on tourism cooperation and a memorandum on the joint-development of regional cooperation framework this June. Both parties also agreed to strengthen their cooperation on the development of cross-border infrastructures, transportation, business and education, as a start to develop other industries in tourism, culture and training.

Considered as one of the great leaps forward on increasing regional integration of the Greater Pearl River Delta Region, Hengqin Island will be transformed into a thriving economic and tourism hub. Both sides will kickoff major infrastructural developments on Hengqin Island in Zhuhai as a key model of collaboration for the Pearl River Delta Region.

The investment on the 104.46 sq-km Hengqin Island include namely the new campus of the University of Macau, which will cover an area of 1.09 sq-km and the launch of a scientific and industrial park for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a common goal of Macau and Guangdong in local diversification.

Under the TCM cooperation plan, Guangdong will offer land for development and knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine education and research, while Macau will provides funding and human resources to transform western Hengqin Island into a center for TCM research and services.

 

Macau government boosts relationship with Taiwan

   Macau government announces its commitment in boosting relationship with Taiwan. The SAR government has developed its programme for 2010, which includes the mechanism of communication between Macau and Taiwan with an aim to increase exchange and cooperation, namely in trade, tourism, education and culture.

Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On announced on April 26 that the SAR government plans to organise delegations to visit Taiwan in the second half of the year, and conduct publicity and promotional activities for the Macau Week to be held in Taipei.

The Chief Executive also welcomed delegations from Taiwan to visit Macau in order to have a better understanding of concept of “One country, two systems”.
