CONSTRUCTION OF MACAU'S LIGHT-RAIL SYSTEM SETS TO START SECOND HALF OF 2010

The Transportation Infrastructure Office (GIT) has announced the Construction Plan of the Phase 1 of Macau Light Rapid Transit (LRT) on October 17, 2009. Taking into consideration the necessity for regional integration in terms of transportation, such as the future Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Rail System and HK-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the overall system capacity has to be expanded, from the formerly proposed maximum capacity of 8,000 pphpd (passengers per hour per direction) to operation capacity at about 8,000 pphpd in Year 2014 and 14,200 pphpd in Year 2020 during peak hours in the new Plan. The total number of Phase 1 stations is reduced to 21. After reviewed by the Project Management Consortium, the budget has been updated to MOP 7.5 billion and the line is expected to be in revenue service in Year 2014.

GIT is imminent to call for International Tenders of Rolling Stock and Systems. As soon as the supply of Rolling Stock and Systems is contracted, civil works will begin progressively. As such, GIT will continue its effort in integrity monitoring and cost control, and make sure that any updates will be available in a timely manner, so as to ensure a high transparency for the Project.
