CHINA'S TWO SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGIONS AGREE TO STRENGTHEN CO-OPERATION
China's two Special Administrative Regions have agreed to strengthen co-operation during Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa's first official visit to Macau since its reversion from Portuguese to Chinese administration last year. Mr Tung paid a half-day visit to Macau at the invitation of his local counterpart, Edmund Ho Hau-wah, on May 12. Speaking at the end of the visit, the Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive said both sides had agreed to increase co-operation in a wide range of areas. Mr Tung stated he was optimistic about the future development of bilateral relations between the two Special Administrative Regions in the Pearl River Delta. He also said that the Hong Kong SAR Government had decided to appoint a special liaison officer to handle relations with the Macau SAR. Mr Ho described the visit as a "great success". He underlined the fact that a number of companies incorporated in Macau were interested in being listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. EUREKA [meets] Asia 2000 in Macau
Hosted by the Macau Special Administrative Region government and organised
by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (CMST) and its Portuguese
counterpart in conjunction with the Macau Productivity and Technology
Transfer Centre, the Technological Exchange Centre of the CMST and Agncia
de Inova This was the second edition of EUREKA [meets] Asia, which focused this
time on four technology development areas: environment, ocean research,
information, and new materials. It also included a technology exhibition,
presentations on some ongoing EUREKA projects, thematic workshops, bilateral
meetings and a seminar on "Opportunities for Scientific and Technological
Cooperation between China and the European Union." According to a joint declaration between the Chinese and Portuguese
Ministries of Science and Technology, the 3rd EUREKA [meets] Asia will
take place in Macau in 2002. |
