CHIEF EXECUTIVE TO VISIT
PORTUGAL AND FRANCE IN MAY

Macau's Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau-wah will visit Portugal and France in May, a spokesman for his office has announced. The 8-day visit, which will start in Lisbon on May 17 and end in Paris on May 24, will include talks with top Portuguese and French government officials, business representatives and community leaders, namely Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio and Prime Minister António Guterres.

The trip will be Mr Ho's first overseas tour since taking the helm of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) government on December 20 last year. The Chief Executive is expected to tour several Asian countries later this year and visit a number of Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa next year.

Mr Ho's visit to Portugal is expected to consolidate Macau's historical ties of friendship with the Portuguese people and promote business relations. The official entourage will include Secretary for Economy and Finance, Francis Tam Pak-Yuen and also a number of businessmen, government officials and media representatives from Macau. While Portugal holds the European Union's rotating presidency in the first half of the year, France will hold the presidency in the second half. Macau is the only entity in Southeast Asia to maintain a trade and co-operation agreement with the European Union.

Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, co-ordinator of the Macau Mission in Lisbon, has been appointed the Macau Special Administrative Region's official representative to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and World Customs Organisation (WCO).

The appointments, signed by Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah, were gazetted in February.

Mr Rosário is an engineer by profession. He is a former member of the Macau Legislative Assembly and director of the pre-handover Macau government's Public Works and Transport Department.
