Veteran lawmaker and WTCM Board Chairman Susana Chou has been elected President of the first Legislative Assembly of the Macau Special Administrative Region.
Ms Chou replaced Anabela Ritchie at the helm of the 23-member legislature on December 20, 1999, the day of the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR). She was elected by and from among the Legislative Assembly's members in October 1999. She has been a deputy to the Assembly since 1976.
The new president, who was born in Shanghai in December 1941, is an electrophysics engineer by profession, a prominent community leader and honorary consul of France, as well as one of Macau's most successful business women.
The first legislature of the MSAR held its first plenary session on December 20, 1999, when it approved 10 pieces of legislation on various organisational aspects of the new administration and judiciary.
