AND IMPORTS GROW
Macau's foreign merchandise trade recorded growing exports and imports and a surplus of 17 million patacas in the first half of the year.
Macau's total export value, including domestic and re-exports, amounted to 8.138 billion patacas between January and June, an increase of 8.1 per cent on the same period last year. The total import value reached 8.121 billion patacas, a growth of 6.1 per cent. Textiles and garments took up 82.6 per cent of Macau's total export value in the first six month of 1999, when three quarters of all exports were shipped to the United States and the 15-nation European Union.
The United States took up 46.4 per cent of Macau's total exports, while the European Union had a share of 28.6 per cent of Macau's overall export value. Exports to the United States grew 15.3 per cent, but those to the European Union fell 4.1 per cent. About 52 per cent of Macau's total import value originated from mainland China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. While the United States had a share of just 5.4 per cent in Macau's total import value, 15.7 per cent of all imports came from the European Union.
Textile and garment manufacturing, tourism and government-franchised casino gambling are the mainstays of Macau' economy.
