JIANG ZEMIN 
Chinese Vice-Prime Minister Qian Qichen has described President Jiang
Zemin's visit to Portugal on October 20-27 as an "important summit"
by the two countries before Macau's handover this December.
Mr Qian made the remark during the 10th plenary session of the 100-member Preparatory Committee of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) in Beijing in August. The Chinese Vice-Premier expressed great satisfaction with Macau's handover preparations headed by Chief Executive-designate Edmund Ho Hau-wah. The 44-year old chartered accountant and certified auditor was elected Macau's first post-handover Chinese Chief Executive by a 199-member Selection Committee of local residents on May 15. He will assume office on December 20. President Jiang has said he will attend Macau's handover ceremony at midnight on December 19.
