Portuguese Economic Affairs Minister Joaquim
Pina Moura paid an official visit to Macau and China in January. He
signed five co-operation agreements between public entities in Macau
and Portugal,
covering co-operation in the areas of industrial property, investments, trade and tourism,
technology transfer and professional training programmes, during his stay in Macau.
Mr Moura emphasised that Macau would continue to play a
"very special role" in the bilateral relationship between Portugal and China
also after its reversion to China in December.
Mr Moura stressed his three-day official visit to China had given
"renewed impetus" to business ties between the two countries. The minister
co-chaired a plenary session of the Sino-Portuguese Joint Economic Commission during his
stay in Beijing, where he also met with State Councillor Wu Yi, a member of the Chinese
Communist Party's powerful politburo. The two sides signed an agreement on the setting-up
of a Sino-Portuguese joint venture company between the North China Power Group and the
Portuguese Institute for Welding and Quality Control.
