UROPEAN UNION EXPRESSES INTEREST IN CONTINUING MUTUAL CO-OPERATION WITH MACAU BEYOND 1999

The 15-nation European Union has expressed interest in maintaining mutual co-operation with Macau beyond the Territory's reversion to China next year.

A high-ranking official of the European Union (EU) said in Brussels in June the EU was "very interested" in maintaining its mutual co-operation arrangements with Macau beyond the 1999 handover.

Macau and the European Union held their annual bilateral meeting in Brussels in May. The Macau government's Secretary for Economic Co-ordination, Vitor Pessoa, gave a detailed briefing on Macau's economic development situation during the meeting.

Both sides agreed to strengthen their bilateral co-operation covering investment promotion campaigns, the protection of international property rights, professional tourism and hotel management training schemes and special programmes to promote Europe's single currency, the euro, in Asia through Macau's prestigious European Studies Institute.
