MACAU GOVERNOR URGES CHINA TO INCREASE
Macau's Governor, Gen. Vasco Rocha Vieira, has urged China to increase its investments in the Territory.
Gen. Vieira made the appeal during a one-hour working meeting with China's reform-minded premier, Zhu Rongji, in Beijing on 14 July.
Gen. Vieira said after the meeting with China's economic czar that Beijing's economic support of Macau constituted a "factor of stability" within the context of the current Asian financial turmoil. The Governor also said that Macau's transition towards Chinese rule next year was a "joint process, in which China also has its responsibilities".
Gen. Vieira, who paid an official visit to China at the invitation of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the Chinese State Council, also urged China to increase its economic co-operation with Macau, namely by raising the number of Chinese tourists allowed to visit the Territory, aside from increasing direct mainland Chinese investments in Macau.
Gen. Vieira also said Premier Zhu had advised Macau to hold a series of promotion campaigns in China in order to attract new Chinese investments to the Territory.
The Governor praised the Chinese premier for his "spirit of openness and modernisation", describing Mr Zhu as a "symbol of a modern China that has become a factor of stability in the world".
Gen. Vieira paid an official visit to Mongolia before his top-level talks in Beijing. The Mongolian government in Ulanbator expressed great interest in increasing its business relations with Macau.
