The World Trade Center Macau registered "positive results" in 1997, in
spite of the financial turmoil that hit the region in the second
half of last year, WTC Macau Executive Committee President António
Leça announced on 16 April.
Speaking after the annual general meeting of the WTC Macau, Mr Leça said the "loss of competitiveness of Macau's manufacturing and export sectors" and the "paralysis" of the Territory's real-estate sector due to a continuing property glut "have all effectively had a negative impact on our efforts to consolidate the development of the WTC Macau project". Mr Leça also said after the 15th general meeting of the WTC Macau that 1998 "will be a year of the continuation of a sustained growth policy, which will not put the feasilbility of the WTC Macau project at risk." The general meeting decided to distribute a divident of 50 patacas per share and to continue developing the "China Desk" project, which consists in the "installation and operation of a structure to support business activities and investment projects in the People's Republic of China". |
The general meeting also decided to continue the WTC Macau consulting project
for the setting-up of a World Trade Center in Maputo. It was also decided
to continue inviting internationally recognised economists to address the
WTC Macau in 1998, such as João Salgueiro, Costa Pinto and An Min
last year.
Meanwhile, the President of WTC Macau António Leça also attended the 3-6 April WTCA meetings in Santiago, Chile, which were totally attended by 160 delegates, including 140 WTC delegates, 20 trade mission delegates and 20 other participants. Hosted by WTC Santiago, the programme included an FSTS Board meeting, a WTCA Board meeting, regional meetings, committee meetings and a plenary session. Moreover,
a Multicultural Poster Award was presented to the WTC Macau at the meeting
in Santiago. The poster is a promotional product of the Macau Government's
Tourist Office.
