JAPANESE CONSUL-GENERAL SAYS MACAU HAS POTENTIAL
TO BECOME INTERNATIONAL SERVICE CENTRE IN PERAL RIVER DELTA

       Macau has great potential to become an international service centre in the Pearl River delta, Japan’s consul-general accredited to Hong Kong and Macau, Hideaki Ueda, said at a local seminar in November.

     Mr Ueda urged Macau to intensify its relations with the western part of the Pearl River estuary in order to take advantage of its booming hinterland in mainland China.

     The Japanese diplomat stressed that Macau had great potential to become a "service centre for foreign companies interested in expanding in the region," adding Macau should be able to evolve from a "city of casinos and tourism" into a "city of international business and tourism". .

MACAU FIGURES

     Macau’s foreign merchandise trade in the first nine months this year resulted in a trade balance surplus of 274 million patacas.

     The territory’s export-import ratio improved from 97.2 per cent in the first nine months last year to 102.2 per cent in the same period this year.

     The total export value, comprising both domestic exports and re-exports, amounted to 12.709 billion patacas, up 11.4 per cent on the first nine months last year.

     The total import value reached 12.434 billion patacas, up six per cent. While domestic exports rose 17 per cent, re-exports fell 16.8 per cent..
